PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - The Shawnee State volleyball team completed a perfect season in the American Mideast Conference as they won a pair of matches in New York this weekend to go 12-0 in conference play.
This is the first time in Shawnee State history that the Bears have captured the AMC Championship. The Bears will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship that will begin the Opening Round on Saturday, November 21.
After a long trip, Shawnee State defeated Roberts Wesleyan in four sets on Friday. The Bears defeated the Raiders by scores of 25-26, 25-22, 23-25, and 25-20. Junior Heather Koehler led the Bears as she drilled 15 kills out of 38 attempts with no errors at the net. She also tallied four solo blocks.
Junior Jami Turrill added 14 kills, 10 digs, and two blocks. Senior Megan Wills added nine kills. Junior Haley Halcomb led the Bears on the floor as she set up 38 assists. She also tallied 10 digs and two blocks. Junior Tiffany Dailey led the defense as she dug up 22 digs.
The Bears then traveled to Daemen on Saturday in their final AMC match-up. Shawnee State had little trouble with Daemen as the Bears defeated the Wildcats in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-19, and 25-20.
Koehler led the Bears charge with 19 kills and two blocks. Wills added 13 kills and two blocks. Halcomb tallied 36 assists to go with two kills and two service aces. The Bears had four players in double-figures in digs. Dailey led the Bears with 22 digs, while Halcomb and Turrill each added 13 and freshman Jessica Winkleman added 10 digs.
Shawnee State will wait to find out their match-up in the Opening Round of the NAIA National Tournament.
